A Vacation in Oslo
Came back from a three week vacation in Oslo. Aside from sightseeing, I observed some interesting cultural differences between Norway and the US especially for the immigrants. In Oslo, you can see immigrants dressed in their original country clothes (tall wrapped head piece and big earrings for Africans; head piece and robe for Pakistani) either on the road or working at a government agency. In the US, everyone seems to dress as an “American” and you couldn’t really tell whether they are from outside of country just from appearances. As an immigrant myself, I probably prefer to dress as an “American” and somehow it feels more fit in to me. I never talked with any immigrant in Oslo, so I would not know how they really feel about Oslo in general — do they feel like home or do they feel like living in a foreign country? But one thing for sure is clear that Oslo is a city of peace. No matter where you go, people seem to be at peace with each other and the environment. Alfred Nobel chose Oslo to be the place to award Nobel Peace for a reason unknown to the public. Might be the tolerance of Oslo people?
